Key features

  • 7kW single-phase charging, about 20 to 30 miles of range per hour
  • RFID card start: the charger will only work with a card, 2 cards included
  • Set a delayed start of up to 24 hours on the unit to charge on cheaper overnight rates
  • LCD screen shows voltage, current, kWh, charge time and temperature
  • 5m tethered Type 2 cable with holster hook
  • IP66 weatherproof box for outdoor walls
  • Built-in protection: earth leakage, over-current, over and under voltage, short circuit, over-temperature

Will it fit my car?

It has a Type 2 connector, which is the standard socket on almost every electric car and plug-in hybrid sold in the UK, including Tesla, BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes, Kia, Hyundai, Renault, Ford, Nissan, Polestar, Volvo, Cupra, Jaguar, Skoda, Peugeot and Vauxhall models. Older cars with a Type 1 socket (for example a Nissan Leaf made before 2018) need a different charger.

At 7kW most cars add around 20 to 30 miles of range per hour. A typical 60kWh battery charges from empty to full in roughly 9 hours, so overnight. Your car can only charge as fast as its own on-board charger allows.

Installation

This charger must be installed by a qualified electrician on its own dedicated circuit, to BS 7671. The manufacturer recommends 6mm² copper cable for runs up to 30 metres from the meter (10mm² for longer runs), protected by a 2-pole 40A circuit breaker and a 30mA RCD. Breakers and RCDs are not included. Your electrician will also check the earthing arrangement. The unit mounts about 1.3 to 1.4 metres from the ground, with a holster hook for the cable.

Not listed? Look at the charging flap. A Type 2 socket is round with a flat top and 7 holes; a Type 1 socket is fully round with 5 holes. Every car charges at up to its own on-board charger limit, which is 7kW on most electric cars and often 3.6kW on plug-in hybrids.

EV charger questions

How fast does a 7kW charger charge my car?

Most cars add around 20 to 30 miles of range per hour at 7kW. A typical 60kWh battery goes from empty to full in roughly 9 hours, so it is ready in the morning. Your car can only charge as fast as its own on-board charger allows.

Will it work with my car?

Yes if your car has a Type 2 socket, which almost every electric car and plug-in hybrid sold in the UK does, including Tesla, BMW, Audi, VW, Mercedes, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Nissan, Volvo and Vauxhall. Older cars with a Type 1 socket, such as a Nissan Leaf made before 2018, need a different charger.

Do I need an electrician to fit it?

Yes. It must be installed by a qualified electrician on its own circuit, with a 40A breaker and a 30mA RCD (not included). They will also check your earthing and the cable run from your consumer unit.

Can I charge on a cheap overnight tariff?

The WiFi and RFID versions let you set a delayed start of up to 24 hours on the unit, and the plug & play version can also be started from the app, so you can line charging up with your off-peak hours.

Can it be fitted outside?

Yes. The control box is rated IP66 (IP55 with the car plugged in) and works from -30°C to +50°C, so it suits an outside wall, garage or driveway.

What is the difference between the two versions?

They share the same 7kW charger and 5m Type 2 cable. The plug & play version charges as soon as you plug in, and can also be controlled from the Tuya / Smart Life app over WiFi. The RFID version only starts when you tap one of its 2 cards, so nobody else can use it.
