How to Install a Panoramic Electric Fire in a Media Wall: Step-by-Step Guide

This guide summarises how an Econovex deep panoramic fire is built into a media wall or chimney breast, based on the manufacturer's manual. Always read the full manual supplied with your fire before you start, and use a qualified electrician for any electrical work.

Before you start

  • Test the fire first. Plug it in and check it works, and pair the remote, before you build it in.
  • Choose a non-load-bearing wall. The manual says the fire must only be recessed into non-load-bearing walls.
  • Avoid damp locations and keep the fire at least 1 m from curtains, furniture and other combustible materials.
  • Tools: Phillips screwdriver, stud finder, level, tape measure, electric drill and wood drill bit.

1. Plan the opening

Build the framed opening to the recess size for your model:

Model Recess opening (W x H x D) Overall size (W x H x D) Pairs with
Econovex 1270 1270 x 560 x 300 mm 1296 x 570 x 311 mm 50" to 55" TV
Econovex 1600 1600 x 560 x 300 mm 1626 x 570 x 311 mm 55" to 65" TV
Econovex 1800 1800 x 560 x 300 mm 1826 x 570 x 311 mm 65" to 75" TV
Econovex 2000 2032 x 560 x 300 mm 2058 x 570 x 311 mm 65" to 85" TV

Keep to the minimum clearances:

  • Floor: at least 150 mm from the bottom of the fire to the floor.
  • Above: at least 200 mm from the top of the fire to a TV, mantel or ceiling.
  • Sides and back: 0 mm.
  • In front: keep furniture, curtains and other combustible materials at least 1 m away.

2. Plan the power

The fire is a 230V plug-in unit with a 2 m cord and a 3-pin plug. The manual recommends a dedicated circuit, with the socket at the top right of the framed opening, and advises against plugging other appliances into the same circuit. Have a qualified electrician install the socket.

3. Frame and line the opening

Frame the opening and finish the inside walls of the enclosure (for example with plasterboard), so no insulation or vapour barrier can touch the fire.

4. Fit the fire

Fit the four supplied L-brackets, then secure the fire in the opening with drywall screws at least 1¼ inch (32 mm) long.

5. Choose 3-sided, corner or flush

For a 3-sided (bay) fit, leave both ends open. For a 2-sided (corner) fit, fit a side cover on the end you want to hide. For a flush fit, fit both side covers. The side glass must be installed before the metal side cover goes on.

6. Finish the wall

Mask and cover the fire, then plaster or board up to the finishing edges around the firebox. When it is done, only the glass and the slim heat vent along the top should show.

7. Dress the fire and fit the glass

Spread the ember media evenly across the bed and place the log set. Fit the front glass into the bottom channel at an angle, stand it upright and secure the top retainer bracket. Fit each side glass into its top channel, swing the bottom into the firebox, slide it down into the bottom channel and push it back until it stops.

Looking after it

Always switch off and unplug before cleaning. Clean the glass with glass cleaner sprayed onto a cloth (never directly onto the fire), and vacuum or dust the vents. Never spray the fire with water, and do not open any panels: there are no user-serviceable parts inside.
