How to Create the Perfect Media Wall with a Fireplace: Step-by-Step Guide

A modern media wall fireplace is a stunning, practical addition to your home. Combining modern style, functionality, and warmth, a built-in electric fire or 3-sided panoramic fireplace makes for the perfect focal point in any modern living space.

This step-by-step guide will help you build your own media wall, from selecting the right electric fire to installing it securely and ensuring it fits your home perfectly.

Tools Required for Installation

Before starting the installation process, gather the necessary tools to ensure a smooth setup:

  • Tape Measure
  • Pencil
  • Spirit Level
  • Screwdriver
  • Screw Bit
  • Drill Bit
  • Fixing kit (supplied free with all our fires)
  • Stud Detector (for plasterboard installations, not supplied)
  • Wall Anchors (for plasterboard installations, not supplied)
  • Wireless Spirit Level (optional, but highly recommended)

Step 1: Measure and Plan the Position

The first step in creating your media wall is to measure your space carefully. Consider the height, width and depth of the wall, allowing enough space for your fire, TV, and any other elements you want to include (such as built-in storage). Consider where you want to position your electric fire for media wall and determine the finished height. It's important to ensure the wall is strong enough to support both the fire and TV.

Tip: Use a spirit level to ensure your measurements are aligned perfectly. Mark the points where the appliance will be located and determine the final position for the best aesthetic and functional results.

Step 2: Build the Media Wall Frame

Now that you've measured and planned, it's time to build the frame for your media wall. This is a crucial step to ensure your media wall fireplace and any additional elements, such as a TV or storage, are securely supported. Construct the frame from timber or metal studs, ensuring it is sturdy enough to bear the weight of the fire and any electronics.

  1. Frame Construction: Install vertical studs to form the wall frame and horizontal cross beams where your electric fire for media wall will sit. Make sure the frame is square and level before fixing it into place.
  2. Plasterboard: Once the frame is secure, apply plasterboard to cover the structure. Leave enough space in the middle of the wall frame for your electric fire, TV, or built-in storage.

Tip: Be sure to create any necessary cut outs or recesses in the plasterboard for the electric fire. You can also pre-install any electrical outlets for easy connections later on.

Step 3: Secure the Wall Bracket

Once the position is determined, it’s time to secure the wall bracket. Use the wall plugs and screws provided to attach the bracket to the wall. If you're not mounting the media wall electric fire to a masonry wall, you'll need to choose appropriate fixings suitable for your wall type, such as plasterboard anchors.

Important: Avoid using silicones, adhesives, or wet plaster to seal the appliance. These can cause long-term damage or prevent easy removal if necessary.

Tip: Before finishing with plasterboard, create a maintenance hatch for easy future access to the appliance, ensuring you can troubleshoot or adjust settings when needed.

Step 4: Install the Fire

With the bracket in place, it's time to install the electric fire for media wall. Depending on your model, it’s essential to ensure there’s proper clearance for air vents. We recommend leaving a minimum of 50mm of clearance beneath any vents to avoid blocking airflow.

Tip: Before fully installing, turn on the appliance to make sure it works properly and is connected to a power source first. Use the provided electrical lead for a quick check before securing everything in place.

Tip: For larger models, like the 72-inch or 80-inch versions, additional support may be necessary. These models require extra reinforcement to avoid putting strain on the wall or mounting brackets.

Step 5: Double-Check Clearance

Once the fire is positioned, ensure that no part of the appliance is bearing the weight of the studwork or surrounding materials. The appliance should sit freely on the bracket without bearing any excess load.

Tip: Ensure that vents aren’t covered, as blocking them could result in overheating or inefficient operation.

Step 6: Add Cladding or Finishing Touches

If you’re using cladding materials like wood panelling or paint, add these to finish off your media wall design. Ensure that the materials used around the fireplace complement your electric fire’s design, such as matching the colours or textures to your living room style.

The cladding of your media wall sets the tone for the entire room. You can choose from a variety of materials depending on your style preferences:

  • Wood Panelling: If you're looking for a warm, rustic feel, wood panelling is an excellent choice. It provides texture and can be stained or painted to match your decor.
  • Paint: For a sleek, modern look, painted cladding is a minimalist option. Opt for neutral colours like grey, white, or black for a contemporary feel, or bold hues for a striking design.
  • Stone or Brick: For a more industrial vibe, stone or brick cladding adds character and texture to the space.

Tip: If you're opting for wood panelling, consider tongue and groove panels for a clean and smooth finish. Alternatively, a lightweight MDF board can give you the same effect for a fraction of the cost.

Step 7: Check Functionality and Test

Before sealing everything, double-check the operation of your fire. Ensure the flames are functioning as expected, and the heat is distributed properly. If you have a media setup with additional devices like sound systems or a TV, now is the time to integrate them into your media wall design.

Creating a media wall with a fireplace is a rewarding project that enhances both the functionality and aesthetics of your living space. Whether you opt for a panoramic electric fire or a 3-sided electric fire, your media wall will be the heart of your room. With the right tools, planning, and a few expert tips, you'll have the perfect setup in no time.
